The Chinese Government announced in May that it has ended a ban on the import of forest products from Australia that was imposed in 2020.

Forestry Australia welcomes the return of trade, although it cautions Australian industry against heavy reliance on exports. Australia is still a net importer of forest products, and should not rely on imports to meet our growing domestic demand for timber products.

Major events, such as supply shortages, shipping challenges, the China import ban, and other events of the last several years have highlighted how vulnerable the overall supply chain can be. The industry as a whole should be focused on investing in our domestic capability and reducing imports, rather than focusing on exports.
