The timber oil market has long been dominated by water-based products, such as Intergrain Ultradeck, Cabots Aquadeck, FeastWatson, etc. For many contractors and home-owners, they are often all they have ever used and known.

However, the experience of many timber experts has shown that these products are not suitable in external applications, and are probably one of the major causes of the failure of decks. (The ideal uses of the water-based products are weather-protected applications only, such as decks with a roof).

We recently inspected a project on the Sunshine Coast, which was a hardwood decking product that had been coated with a water-based timber oil. The below photos show several common issues that arise:

Once the coating weathers and cracks, the moisture is trapped underneath the coating, causing the otherwise fit-for-purpose hardwood decking to rot.
Degradation, flaking and peeling of the water-based coating. This will require a major maintenance job; sanding and stripping the timber back, before re-applying another coating (hopefully a penetrating timber oil!).

The alternative is a solvent-based timber oil, also called a penetrating timber oil. Almost all timber experts are unanimous in agreement that penetrating timber oils provide better protection for the timber, as they do not form a film on the surface.

This quality make the oils easier to re-apply, and does not cause the issues with the rotting as described above.
